Content Policy
Last updated: April 11, 2026
EmberScripts is a platform for creative writers. We believe in giving authors maximum creative freedom while maintaining a safe environment for readers. This Content Policy explains what is and isn't allowed on EmberScripts, and how we enforce these rules.
Our Philosophy
Fiction explores the full spectrum of human experience — including darkness, conflict, and difficult themes. We do not police artistic expression. Authors are free to write about violence, morally complex characters, controversial topics, and mature themes. What we do require is that authors rate their content honestly and that all content stays within the boundaries of Swiss law.
Content Rating System
When sharing or publishing content publicly, authors must assign a maturity rating to their story. Ratings help readers make informed choices and ensure minors are not exposed to inappropriate material.
General
Suitable for all audiences. May contain mild conflict, fantasy violence without graphic detail, and themes appropriate for younger readers.
Teen
May contain moderate violence, infrequent strong language, romantic themes without explicit detail, and mildly dark or intense themes. Comparable to a PG-13 film.
Mature (16+)
Contains content not suitable for readers under 16. This may include:
- Graphic violence or detailed depictions of injury.
- Frequent strong language.
- Sexual themes or non-graphic sexual content.
- Intense psychological horror, trauma, or disturbing subject matter.
- Drug or alcohol use depicted in detail.
Readers must confirm they are 16 or older before accessing Mature-rated content.
Explicit (18+)
Contains graphic adult material. This may include:
- Graphic sexual content between adult characters.
- Extreme or detailed violence (gore, torture).
- Graphic depictions of drug use.
Readers must confirm their age before accessing Explicit-rated content. All characters depicted in sexual situations must be adults (18+).
Mis-rating
Deliberately under-rating content to bypass age restrictions violates our Terms of Service and Swiss law (Art. 197 StGB). We will adjust ratings and may take further action against accounts that repeatedly mis-rate content.
Prohibited Content
The following is strictly prohibited on EmberScripts, regardless of maturity rating, artistic context, or fictional framing:
Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM)
Any depiction of minors (persons under 18) in sexual situations, including fictional, drawn, or AI-generated depictions. This includes romantic or sexualized content involving minors, even if no explicit acts are described. This prohibition is mandated by Articles 197(4) and 197(5) of the Swiss Criminal Code. Violations will result in immediate account termination and may be reported to law enforcement.
Incitement to Real-World Violence or Terrorism
Content that promotes, glorifies, or provides instructions for real-world violence, terrorism, or armed conflict against specific persons or groups. This includes manifestos, recruitment material, and instructional content for weapons or attacks. Prohibited under Articles 259 and 260 of the Swiss Criminal Code.
Note: Fiction that depicts violence, war, or terrorism as part of a narrative is permitted. The prohibition targets content that advocates for or instructs real-world harm, not fiction that explores these themes.
Doxxing and Deanonymization
Publishing private personal information of real persons without their consent, including but not limited to: real names, home addresses, phone numbers, financial information, or workplace details. Protected under Swiss personality rights (Art. 28 ZGB) and data protection law (nFADP).
Incitement to Hatred or Discrimination
Content whose primary purpose is to incite hatred or discrimination against persons or groups based on race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Prohibited under Article 261bis of the Swiss Criminal Code.
Note: Fiction that portrays bigotry, prejudice, or discrimination through characters or narrative is not inherently a violation. The prohibition targets content that advocates for hatred, not fiction that depicts it — even unflinchingly.
Permitted But Sensitive
The following content is permitted when properly rated, but authors should be thoughtful about how they handle these topics:
- Graphic violence, war, and horror (rate as Mature or Explicit).
- Sexual content between adult characters (rate as Mature or Explicit).
- Suicide, self-harm, and mental illness as narrative themes (rate as Mature or higher; consider content warnings).
- Drug and alcohol use (rate as Mature or higher if depicted in detail).
- Hate speech in dialogue when portraying bigoted characters (does not constitute incitement when clearly presented as fiction).
We encourage authors to use content warnings at the beginning of stories that contain potentially triggering material. This is optional but appreciated by readers.
Reporting Content
Every public EmberScripts page has a Report button. If you encounter content that you believe violates this policy, please report it. You can report anonymously — no account is required.
When reporting, please:
- Select the most appropriate reason (illegal content, harassment, spam, or other).
- Provide details if possible — a brief description helps us review faster.
- Optionally provide your email if you'd like to be notified of the outcome.
How We Enforce
- Automated screening — when content is made public, it is screened by an automated moderation system. Flagged content enters our review queue but remains accessible while under review.
- Human review — all flagged content and user reports are reviewed by a human moderator. We do not take action based solely on automated flags.
- Actions we may take:
- Rating adjustment — we may change the maturity rating of content that is mis-rated.
- Content removal — we may take down content that violates this policy.
- Warning — we may issue a warning for first-time or minor violations.
- Account suspension — for repeated or serious violations.
- Account termination — for egregious violations, particularly involving prohibited content.
- Law enforcement referral — for content that violates Swiss criminal law.
Appeals
If your content is removed or your account is actioned, you may appeal by contacting us in writing. Appeals will be reviewed by a different moderator than the one who made the original decision. We aim to resolve appeals within 14 business days.
